OUR COLLECTION OF OLD TOOLS AND ITEMS<\/h1><\/div><\/div><\/div>

Over the years, we have collected old fishing tools, agricultural tools, equipment used in fishing, objects used in everyday use, but also clothes and other things that we found interesting.<\/p>\n

Objects that were used in the past are displayed throughout the entire area of the restaurant. Next to each item there is a QR code, and by hovering your mobile phone camera over it, the link will take you to a website with a description of the item, i.e. for what purposes it was used.<\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

FISHING NET TRAWL<\/div>
<\/hr>
Also known as the girarica net,<\/strong>\u00a0 it was dragged with a small thrust to a maximum depth of 20 meters. The fish that was caught with it was the mullet (manula), mussels, cuttlefish, mullet, etc. Today it is banned because it destroys the diversity of the fish stock in the coast.<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

FISHING NET ''POPUNA''<\/div>
<\/hr>
A trophilic net with a small \"eye\"<\/strong>\u00a0was used to catch all the fish that lived in the place where the net would \"sink\". Today, this type of net is prohibited if it has an \"eye\" of less than 16 cm, because it destroys the young fish.<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

FISHING NET \"BUSKAVICA\"<\/p><\/div>

<\/hr>
The mesh net, with a mesh size of about 1.5 - 1.7 cm,<\/strong>\u00a0 is used to catch manula fish. It was used in such a way that the net would be drowned near a school of fish, and then a large stick that has a flat flail at the end (\"pobuk\") would be beaten on the surface of the sea iso the fish would get scared and flee into the net. Today, the \"pobuk\" is prohibited.<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

A NET PATCHING NEEDLE<\/div>
<\/hr>
A mega patching needle, made as a reminder that<\/strong>\u00a0the wooden netting needles were used before, custom made by a local carpenter. In the past, only wooden needles were used for patching nets, as opposed to today's plastic and metal ones. There used to be 5 needleworkers in the village whose primary activity was making needles. The last one stopped working in 2020.<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

BIG FERAL<\/div>

A gas-powered light that was used on purse seiners,<\/strong> on the so-called \"kana\u0161trela\" - a small wooden boat, before electricity generators came into use.<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

LITTLE FERAL<\/div>
<\/hr>
A petrol powered light, it was used <\/strong>during mollusc fishing (octopus and cuttlefish) with spears. It wasn't used while fishing small pelagic fish because it did not have enough power to create light to attract fish.<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

NAVIGATION LIGHTS<\/div>
<\/hr>
Copper navigation lights,<\/strong>\u00a0which were mounted on the masts, marked the front, back and sides of the ship, in order to signal to the other ships in which direction the ship was going. They ran on petrol and gas.<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

WOODEN PULLEY<\/div>

Pulleys used to lift anchors,<\/strong> raise and lower masts, lift cargo and fishing nets.<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

SMALL TRAPS<\/div>
<\/hr>
Small traps for catching fish<\/strong> that lives up to a depth of 2 meters, for example bream or flounder, sometimes even crabs.<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

WOODEN FISHING BOXES<\/div>
<\/hr>
Wooden fishing boxes were used<\/strong> until the appearance of plastic fishing boxes in the 1970s. They were made by the factory in Kali, called \"Drvorad\".<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

A WOODEN BOAT<\/div>
<\/hr>
A small, auxiliary wooden fishing boat,<\/strong>\u00a0which used its big light to draw the fish away from the main fishing boat so that the shoal could be surrounded with a net.<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

THE \"BOLUN\u010cA\"<\/div>

A scale that was used<\/strong> to weigh fish weighing from 1 to 5 kilos. It was used until the 1960s.<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

SPRTA<\/div>

A basket used instead of a bag,<\/strong> which fishermen would fill with wine, bread and dry figs to carry it to the fishing boat, and when returning from fishing, they would use the basket to carry the fish.<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

SIKNJICA<\/div>
<\/hr>

A small wicker bowl used for carrying fish,<\/strong>\u00a0 either from the market to the house or from the house to the sea where fish are usually cleaned. This type of bowl was made in Kukljica (the village place south of Kali). Here you can see a video of the last man who was manufacturing it.<\/p>\n

KOPANJICA<\/div>
<\/hr>
A bowl used by women in the past for kneading bread dough.<\/strong> It was used to carry the dough to the ovens of the locals who had wood-fired bread ovens. In our house there was a bread oven where the other locals used to come to bake their bread for the whole week (7 pieces + 1 \"ujun\" which was a compensation to the owner of the oven - it was half the size of the regular bread).<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

FISHING IN THE OLD DAYS<\/div>

In the past, before oil, gas and electricity, <\/strong>fishermen would light a big fire on the coast, in the place that protrudes most towards the sea, in order to create a light that will attract fish so the fishermen that were on the sea in boats could surround the fish and catch it with nets.<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

While there were still no technology which the modern ships use to search for fish, fishing was done at places called \"po\u0161te\".\u00a0 \"Po\u0161te\" are places that were known to fishermen as safely approachable places with plenty fish. The locations of those are still passed down from generation to generation. Before going fishing, the owners of the fishing boats would draw a \"\u017egrip\", i.e. a lot - they would draw who would go to which location to fish, so that there would be no conflicts.<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

A SMALL HOUSE FOR REPAIRING FISHING NETS<\/div>

It was used to store fishing nets and other fishing tools.<\/strong>\u00a0Small nets are usually repaired at special storage houses like this, and big fishing nets are usually repaired at the fishing ports.<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

LITTLE BRUZIN<\/div>

A small iron cooking bowl used<\/strong> for prepairing meals on open fire. Fishermen always had this kind of cooking bowl on the fishing boat.<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

BIG BRUZIN<\/div>
<\/hr>
A large metal bowl used for preparing meals<\/strong> on open fire for the whole crew of the fishing boat. Mostly was used for preparing a traditional Kali meal, called ''kualjski brudet''.<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

OSTI<\/div>
<\/hr>
Called \"uosti\" in Kali dialect, a fishing spear<\/strong> is used most often in hunting for molluscs. At night, people went out with a small boat equipped with a light (to attract fish) along the very edge of the coast, in the shallows. As soon as someone sees a fish, they approach it as close as they can and hit it with the spear.<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

Used as a stand for the bowls<\/strong> for cooking food over the fire, \"trenoge\" were present at every fishing boat.<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

THE AUXILIARY FISHING BOAT<\/div>

The auxiliary wooden fishing boat <\/strong>was used to keep the fish in one place using the strong light it carried while the bigger fishing boat surrounded it with a net.<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

A mast that was placed on<\/strong> the wooden fishing boat was used to hold the sailcloth.<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

STONE FROM THE BRUSNIK ISLAND<\/div>
<\/hr>
The stone with a characteristic appearance brought<\/strong> from the island Brusnik, visited while fishing for tuna. During the tuna fishing season, the area around the island of Brusnik is a common area for finding tuna.<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

In the past, wooden oars were the only type of boat propulsion.<\/strong>\u00a0People were very strong and durable - they had to row for a long time to get to the fishing spots, and also after catching fish, they had to bring the boat to the coast as soon as possible.<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

An essential part of the equipment <\/strong>for going fishing. Mostly being used for carrying wine, it was also used for water and olive oil.<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

A wooden container used for salting sardines. <\/strong>A row of sardines, then a row of salt, were interchanged until it was filled. A wooden board would be placed on top, and a large heavy stone would be placed on top of it to press the fish so that the liquid would be pressed out of it. The fish would be ready for consumption after 8 winter months.
