Barilo

A wooden container used for salting sardines. A row of sardines, then a row of salt, were interchanged until it was filled. A wooden board would be placed on top, and a large heavy stone would be placed on top of it to press the fish so that the liquid would be pressed out of it. The fish would be ready for consumption after 8 winter months. If it was salted in the summer months, the fish would be ready sooner.
